8 Crucial Mistakes in BIM Implementation and Ways to Tackle Them
As a BIM modeler, knowing the crucial mistakes in BIM implementation and ways to tackle them can do you a great deal of help. This article contains all you need to know to achieve even more professional results.
BIM (Building Information Modeling) is an intelligent 3D model-based process that provides structure and tools which enable professionals to design realistic infrastructure.
As a BIM modeler, staying ahead of the curve on common mistakes will set your right on track for positive results. It is important to note that BIM offers fantastic benefits to modelers.
However, these benefits can only be realized when certain best practices are set in motion.
With that said, let's take a look at some mistakes in made by modelers in BIM implementation.

LACK OF BIM EXECUTION PLAN(BXP):
Is a BIN execution plan only useful on a big project? Definitely not! One common misconception is the notion that BIM execution should only be carried out on a big project.
With over 100 BIM projects under our belt, we have come to realize that even basic projects should have BIM execution plans. Is this something you should adopt on your next project? Of course, that is, if you want to realize remarkable results.
Building a good BxP is all about making your layout as simplified as possible. A complex BxP hasn't done anyone any good because they are often challenging to implement.
UTILIZING THE WRONG HARDWARE
No, you don't need a supercomputer or the most advanced computer system to produce fabulous results. Often times, tool requirements depend on the size of the project you are working on.
Certain factors determine the performance of your system, they include;
CPU speed
The number of Cores
System memory size
Hard drive- type & size
Graphics card
Don't let this list confuse you. Your system doesn't have to be an expensive one. Just focus on getting a CAD-compatible graphic card graphic and a CPU with six super fast cores.
For example, Revit is a single-threaded application that requires only 1 CPU core at a time. It also utilizes the remaining cores for selected cores.
Softwares like ArchiCAD, however, all system cores to manipulate viewpoints in the background.
Recommended System Configuration:
Operating system: Microsoft Windows 10 or 64-bit- Enterprise
CPU Type: Multi-Core Intel Xeon, or i-Series processor or AMD equivalent with SSE2 technology
Memory: 8 GB RAM
Video Display: 1680 x 1050 with true color
Graphics Card: DirectX 11 capable graphics card with Shader Model 5
Disk Space: 5 GB disk space
NOT EMPHASIZING ON BIM
Taking into account all the expects of BIM; information is accorded the highest regard.
Making important decisions requires accurate information on cost estimation, the quantity of material, project scheduling, maintenance schedule, etc.
Accurate information, void of any scope of misinterpretation, should be utilized in developing your model.
Whatever the level of development you wish to carry out, our services vary according to the client’s requirement. Our services range from LOD-100 to LOD-600.
NEW SOFTWARE- OLD SKILL SETS- BIG NO
As BIM technology continues to evolve, the need to move with the trend cannot be over emphasized. It is essential that you understand how to manipulate the latest features and softwares to make your job easier.
As softwares get new updates, the general approach to using them becomes outdated. Staying up to date on current trends will help you stay ahead of the curve. In summary, it is necessary that you upgrade your knowledge, even as softwares related to your field get updated.
OVER-MODELING
Modeling down to very basic elements is not advisable. Most times, these carefully modeled details are not very visible on the drawing.
There are two basic ways over-modeling can occur;
Excessive elements
Unnecessary details
New modelers are prone to making this common mistake. Unknown to the modeler, how these unnecessary details make their model even more complicated. This usually results in a decrease in loading and drop in navigation speed through sheets.
Learning how to strike a balance when using the right amount of 3D content with softwares like Revit or ArchiCAD is very important. This is one crucial still most modeler-drafters fail to master and execute.
Such modeler-drafters tend to encounter the following issues;
Under Utilisation- This can be attributed to the excessive repetition of a design project.
Over Utilisation- Over complexity, which often results in large file size.
Unsurprisingly, overutilization is a common problem. BIM modelers need to learn how to focus on the main details that actually a key role in how their project turns out.
UNNECESSARY UTILIZATION OF EXTERNAL 2D CONTENT
When it comes to building a standard model, there are some external 2D contents that are utilized. They include;
DWGs
PDFs
Images
Some modelers are faced with common issues like file bloating and performance problems during their modeling stages.
This often occurs as a result of importing any of the above-listed files without accounting for resultant consequences.
Best practices to follow;
Make sure new files are comparable with existing file content
Pay attention to seemingly unimportant specification like total file size and metadata
It is more advice able to link between files rather than the traditional merging/merging method.
LACK OF ADEQUATE QUALITY CHECKS
Professional disciplines often possess guidelines that govern their operations. Of us, Architecture “Redlines” has been an age-old standard. This standard helps us to signifies the correction and scope of improvement in design.
With the aid of a 3 level quality check, we are able to audit and pinpoint specific areas that require modification.
On a fundamental level, there are specific key parameters that come into play in our quality checks. They include the following;
Construct-ability
Industry standards
Duplication
Misplaced elements
If you wish to improve your model design and ability consistently make accurate designs, carrying out quality checks should definitely among your top priorities.
