BIM EXECUTION PLAN (BXP)- WHAT, WHY, WHEN AND HOW

Information as we know it plays a major role in many industries and practices, of course, BIM (Building Information Modeling) isn't left out.

 

Even as BIM projects are set in motion, the development of an effective BIM execution plan (BEP) is required to manage it's information.

A BIM execution plan ensures that important information is readily available through out the course of the project.  

 

The availability of a BIM execution plan cannot be over emphasized especially with project that involve International collaboration.

 

It is important that the BIM Execution Plan be as detailed as possible in terms of project deliverables estimated by the contract and the information exchange protocol.

 

 

 

SHOULD YOU UTILIZE BXP IN YOUR NEXT CONSTRUCTION PROJECT?

 

1) It Ensures Timely Project Delivery And Within Budget

Utilizing a BIM execution plan creates an avenue for both the team's and the stockholders to benefit from a well executed project. BXP gives a clear understanding to key players on their roles and responsibilities. This helps to eliminate the possibility of misunderstanding or confusion. Therefore providing more time for productivity.

We all understand the importance of seeing things from a bigger picture. A properly executed BXP offers a bigger view of the project. This in turn enables the contractors to work within the estimated budget and for the project to be finished in record time.

 

2) Bxp Serves As A Rule Book Of A Construction  Time

Process-oriented professionals all over the world have come to understand that BIM Execution Plan is an important aspect of executing a  BIM methodology.

A BIM Execution Plan acts as a construction rule book that keeps stakeholders updated and involved concerning the happenings of the ongoing project.

A BXP document helps to answer several important questions that are likely to arise during a construction project.

 

  1. What are the roles and duties of every team at each phase?

  2. Where will be the exchange of data between respective teams?

  3. What all processes/teams are involved throughout the process?

  4. What we will do in the BIM Process?

  5. Who will be responsible for each of the involved process?

  6. What all software will be used during the process?

  7. What kind of format we will use?

  8. What is the quality of the model that we will need?

  9. What is the level of Development (LOD) required at each phase of the project?

With all these questions being answered, both the stakeholders and team members have a clearer view of their end goals and focus there energy on how to achieve it.

 

3) It Facilitates Productive Collaboration And Effective Communication

A carefully drafted BIM Execution Plan allows easy collaboration and communication because team members are better able to organise themselves and meet deadlines.

Communication between the teams and stakeholders are as clear and straight forward as possible. They are kept in the loop as regards collaborations in place.

In the event of any misunderstanding, the BIM execution plan offers clear directives that will enable them to be resolved in no time.

 

4. A Bim Execution Plan Offers Transparency In A Construction Project

Like any other business practice, transparency is always a welcome factor. With the success of the overall project being dependent on the output of separate teams, transparency is a key factor.

Involved team members may be divided into the following groups; 

  1. Contractors

  2. Developers  

  3. Construction teams, etc. 

 

Creating a stress-free working environment requires that everyone be aware of their roles and expected results. The possibility of unexpected elements dispruting the work flow of the projects is also addressed by the BIM execution plan.

 

BIM Execution Timeline

There are certain roles that need to be executed at different stages of the construction process.

For a BIM Execution Plan to function effectively, its prepared to be executed in two important phases.

 

  1. Pre-Contract: Response to EIR (Employer’s Information Requirements)

This stage happens right before the contract agreement, a prospective supplier is required to propose a BXP with the objective of demonstrating their capability and approach against the EIR.

 

  1. Post-Contract: MIDP (Master Information Delivery Plan)

Once the contract stage is finalized, the winning supplier needs to present a detailed BIM Execution Plan further. It will be majorly focused on supply chain capability.

 

A Master Information Delivery Plan (MIDP) is also laid out which gives the guidelines of information flow, who is responsible for preparing the information, what protocols and processes will be maintained to develop that information.

 

 

IMPORTANT ELEMENTS THAT MAKE UP A BIM EXECUTION PLAN

There are a lot of important elements that play key roles in information management, planning and documentation.  

Without these elements in place, and applied at the right time, the Constitution process cannot be effectively completed.

They include the following;

  1. Roles and responsibilities of each team

  2. Strategy planning of key deliverables

  3. Set key project milestones & their timeline

  4. Well planned logistics of collaborative processes (i.e. BIM Modeling)

  1. Approach to annotation, abbreviations, and symbols to avoid potential ambiguity

  2. Software to be employed

  1. Data transfer management (Data format, exchange tools etc.)

  2. Project Information Plan (PIP)

  3. Task Information Delivery Plan (TIDP) identifying the delivery of each supplier’s information

  4. Master Information Delivery Plan (MIDP)

  5. Coordination schedule with roles and defined protocols

  6. Working Procedures

  7. BIM iterations management

  8. File naming conventions

  9. Construction tolerance expectations

  10. Data attribute requirement
